go looking for K-lite Mega codecs pack, since installin it i have been able 2 play everything i have got hold of, it has a program called Mediaplayer classic with is such a simple interface, and runs avi, mpgs, etc like a dream and u can boost volume on it as well, in the pack also comes Realplayer and Quicktime alternative, which work just the same as the originals, but r free :-) and of course all the codecs u need will be in the pack as well, just remember when installin it 2 click everything in the lists 2 install...... Good Luck, and Happy Hunting!!

I had the same problem. Someone pointed me in the direction of a free software download called VLC media player. It plays anything, but you have to download the file first and then select open with vlc.

Just put vlc into a search engine and you should find it

What operating system you are using and what verision of Windows Media Player you are using?

I recommanded you to download the lastest Windows Media Player, I was having the same problem last month, and I download the laest Windows Media Player, and also try to download the laest Divx player or codes.

Good Luck!!!!!!!!

You need codec's, not all avi's are the same they are made with differant codec's which means some play some won't if you don't have the right codec's. When you install this set it to play only install you don't need to install all of them unless you are editing movies and such

sounds like you are missing some codecs... try playing it in WMP and if it gives you error saying "no codec found"(or something similar to that) right click on the file, click on error details, click on web-help. it should bring you to Microsoft's site. and tell you what codec you need. (Note: the site it self may not have the codec, but atleast it will tell you what is needed, then you can search for that on Internet)
If you need more help just send me a message.
