It's what the Zen folks call a Koan, a riddle solely designed to provoke and irritate the conscious logical mind and bring about a different way of seeing things. Another one is "What is the sound of one hand clapping?"

It's one of the most famous questions in philosophy and was asked by a man named Bishop Berkeley. In essence it means if no one is around to witness something happening,(does) did it really occur?

Is there some reason it wouldn't? Does sound only occur when someone is there to hear it? On the surface this is a stupid question. I understand the deep meaning and I still think this is stupid.
