I've canoed for years and I think 3mph / 5kph is about right for two adults in an average canoe with gear for a weekend. Does that sound high/low?

Yes, 3 mph for two with gear is about what I do. But note that isn't an average for the day (like 3 mph in a kayak includes breaks, navigation, etc). I figure 2 mph average all day long after lunch, pottie breaks, bug juice, maneuvering through the rocks, etc.

If I'm cranking in front and the stern paddler can keep up enough to steer, we do 4 mph or a touch over for an hour or two in an unloaded boat (25 pounds of gear for the day).

Unless everyone is experienced and trains together, I find having more than two people actually slows the boat down. It is more horsepower and that helps against wind, but it is also more hydodynamic pressure on the hull and the 4th and/or 5th people aren't in optimal positions.

Yeah, that's about right. I'd go faster in my kayak, but for two people with gear in a canoe that would be right.
