"To go potty", which is the way the expression is usually used means to go to the bathroom. It seems (it makes sense to me, without looking it up) that it is a "kiddy version" of chamberpot, much like mommy is a kiddy version of mother.

Before most people had toilets, and used outhouses, there were little "pots" called chamber pots, that were used at night or if someone couldn't get outside to the out house.
The name stuck, but hopefully not the pot. LOL.
