Because at some point in some Chow's life they have attatced someone and so people assume that since that one or maybe a few Chow's have attacked someone, that ALL Chows are agressive. Its just bad breeders or owners raising dogs with a poor temperment that allows them to become agressive and therefore attack someone. It gives the whole breed a bad name.

Becasue at one time some one got attacked and it made the news and after that happens everyone tlaks about it and that breed of dog get a bad reputation.
Also Chows are not the easiest going dogs and some who loved the way they look got them and found out that if they do not train them they can be problem dogs.
I love them I think they are beautiful and make great dogs for an adult willing to spend some time training and working with them.
They are also the cutest puppy ever born.

I am not but I know that chow chows some of them have been reported in a few major cases to have killed small children!

Chows have very strange personalities and it is sometimes hard to "read" them. They tend to be a little aloof with strangers which often deters people.

they may be all that you say they are but not towards people they don't know. i have 2 chows and they are mean as hell. their names are Precious and Cheeko. and they will kill someone if they are threatened.
