Cedar, Rue, and basil. I have used those for protection before. Try wicca.com to learn about candle magick and incense. A good book is Cunningham's book of Incense, Oils, and Brews. And, there are tons of candle magick books.

Actually there is an old native american technique that I have found to work better. Sage or white sage that is dried. The only down fault I have found with it, is that if your doing a large area, the sage stops smoking. You can also do the sage around the body for protection.
If your looking for incense, I know that lavender has been great.

Frankinsense is traditional, of course, white sage is best in America, why not use a native plant, after all. However, it's being overharvested for just that purpose. I get just as good results with fresh garden sage. But I don't use insense, except to make the house smell pretty, I burn the dried herb or resin. You'll need to blow on it to keep it smoking. you can direct the smoke with a feather or a fan, or with your breath. You can buy sage bundles just for this purpose.
I'm sorry, I'm not sure where to send you to learn how to use these things. In my practice, I just use candles as focal points, no special treatment required. I'm not sure what you mean by how to use them.

Dragon's blood is very good for protection, as well as cinnamon. For banishing negativity I'd recommend sage, myrrh, or again dragon's blood. Dragon's blood is pretty much an all-around good one for protection.
I don't have any good websites for it, but Scott Cunningham and Raymond Buckland both have great books on incense, candles, and herbs.

Ignore religious nutcases. These Christians freaks never could let other people do what they wanted without trying to change them. A hundred or so years ago they'd have burnt u at the stake for that question!

Burn sandalwood over a folding knife (a very small one).
Let the ashes touch the blade.
Fold the knife and keep it with you as a talizman. (not as a weapon)
Candles arent much good for protection spells.

The only thing you should be worried about protecting yourself from are the lies of Satan that come in the form of witchcraft.
There are only two forces in the universe: good and evil. God is good, and Satan is evil.
If you can't say for certain that what you're playing with is from God... Then you can be sure it is from the Devil.
