You lay forward with your waist across the pads, and hook your heels at the back. Bend at the waist as far forward as you can go and then bring yourself back up until your body is straight. Don't go beyond straight because this will increase the chance of a lower back injury.

The more advanced method is to hold a weight plate across your chest as you do this.

Of course, it somewhat depends on what kind of roman chair your have in mind. There is another style meant for laying back on and doing sit ups:

Hi there!

There are two primary uses for this. Your abs and your lower back. If you sit supine, and lean back and sit up, you will work your abs. If you are prone, and lean forward and come back up, you will work your lower back. It is great work for your core.

He's right on. It's an excellent abdominal and back workout. My old gym had some, but I moved and there aren't any to be found up here!! Enjoy yourself!
