When a person who has committed a sex offense is registered, their name, address with map and picture are placed on the internet. (In California, there is no differentiation as there are in other states. They're all pictured, although some with no specific addresses.)

My question is: is this fair to the family members who live with the registered sex offender that THEIR address is listed, too? What privacy, constitutional and civil rights do the FAMILIES of sex offenders have? Should they be harassed by proxy? What is their recourse if they are ostracized and penalized, too, along with the offender?

Please only serious answers. If you want to dump on registered sex offenders, find another question. Thank you!

Sorry, but I have no sympathy for anyone who knowingly chooses to live with a sex offender.

Unfortunately, in such a case, it is necessary to infringe upon the rights of the few to protect the rights (and safety) of the many.

I agree with "kja.." If the wife or husband of a sex offender doesn't like the publicity, they at least have a recourse to leave the criminal spouse by divorce and move somewhere else. The rest of us can't just as easily pick up so as not to live near a sex offender. Where is the rest of the neighborhood going to go? We're stuck. It's only fair to display the address and information so that people can protect their children.

I would imagine that most people would see that the spouse of a sex offender is mostly innocent, at least, during the commission of the original act. I can't speak for everyone, but I would reserve my judgement about the spouse unless I was given the opportunity to meet the spouse. I would probably just feel sorry for the poor gal or guy who must be a saint to try to keep *that* marriage together.

But I ask, is your embarrassment worth more than the safety of our children? And if you must endure harrassment, you need to take it up with the local police, as it *should not be tolerated*, but yet *should be expected*. Sad, very sad, but true.

Unfortunately we are judged by the company we keep. Everyone by now knows that the law requires sex offender to register so they can be tracked. People who allow a sex offender to live in their house need to understand that sex offenders are predators and it's only fair to give the community the information it needs to protect itself ,and listing an address at which an offender resides does not violate anyone rights.

This is a good question. I think that we have to give up some of "rights" in order to protect our other "rights". I have a teenage daughter and 4 year old son and I would want to know that a sex offender was living in my neighborhood so that I could protect them. I am not one that would activley seek out people to do harm, but I would protect my own family with what ever I thought was necessary. The sad part is that lots of sex offenders only choice is to move in with family members that are innocent and are upstanding citizens. I don't think people should persecute them for trying to help family members, after all thats what family i supposed to do. Instead of lashing out at them we should do what we think is proper to safe guard our own. I think the intent of the laws for letting people know about sex offenders was right but it has been abused by the citizens. I beleive that the solution to lots of these problems are to revamp the criminal justice system and we have to be more strict on the punishments. After all if you commit a crime against someone what about their rights?

I hope that this isnt too offensive, if so, sorry, However i believe that once a sex offender is convicted of their crime and registered all of their rights as a citzen (regardless of their country of orgin) have become limited and as their rights have become limited, so to do the rights of those that are assosiated with that individual. Its not a matter of Civil Rights as it is a danger to the public. More often than not, sex offender will more than likely reoffend versuses that of say a drug dealer or murderer.I know i would like to know if their were a sex offender living in my neighborhood, and i would like to know where, so that my wife and family are portected. I know that probably doesnt help your case at all. However how are we to protect the ones we love if we dont know whats in our own neighborhoods?

The rules pertaining to to intercourse criminal registration and the Patriot Act are 2 peas in a similar pod. they are kit used to strip electorate of their civil rights. they are purely the commencing up. extra law is pending which will require extra human beings to sign up i.e. pot human beings who smoke and DUIs will quickly be indexed on some internet site someplace. a while will come. Registration for intercourse offenders does no longer something to guard infants. only an relatively small proportion of intercourse offenders ever commit yet another intercourse crime (in accordance to the Bureau of Justice statistics). intercourse Offenders have a decrease recidivism value than very almost all different styles of criminals. those rules are purely a skill to marginilize and shun an entire inhabitants. Over a 0.5 a million human beings around the country and growing to be. The Patriot Act only expands in this prefer to create a sort society. quickly we are able to be sure much extra regulations and abuses against our civil rights. you won't strategies the gov. telling you what to do, the place to stay and listening to your conversations and examining your e-mails and such now when you consider which you haven't any longer something to conceal and lead a organic life. yet who makes a decision what's against the regulation and who's a terrorist. with the aid of the time you do care, it relatively is going to likely be too late for you. you would be in the back of bars or kept away from and villified. the only requirement for the triumph of evil is for stable adult males to do no longer something. you have been warned.

I don't know, but I think that my right to know who the sex offenders in the neighborhood are is more important than your right to not be harassed. If you are that concerned with your name and address, kick out the person who committed the crime. It would be tough to have to kick out your own child, or a brother or sister, but remember that they are the ones who committed the crime. You can't feel more sorry for them than you do for all the potential victims in the nieghborhood.

It all comes down to this. I, as a citizen of the USA and parent of a three year old girl, have a right to know who my nieghbors are. I'm sorry, but that supercedes your right to privacy.

Well the fact that a sex offender lives with you, then you will have to deal with the repercussions. Your rights are not as important as the innocent people that can be hurt by this person. You have knowledge of this offense, others should be allowed the same knowledge.

Guilt by association. So long as a registered sex offender resides in their home, they have to deal with the backlash. Sorry, but the good & safety of our children far outweigh any inconvenience the family of the offender may have to endure.

registered sex offenders should not live with other family members because they but their family at risk of hazing and other acts of hatred from people in the community, sex offenders should live by themselves
