PIT BULLS ARE TERRIBLE DOGS. I WORK WITH A FAT WOMAN THAT HAS ONE, SHE SAYS HOW GREAT IT IS. BUT ANYTIME SHE HAS COMPANY OVER IT CHASES AFTER PEOPLE, BITES THEM, AND ATTACKS. AND THIS DUMB FATTY JUST THINKS IT'S SO FUNNY. PEOPLE THAT GET PIT BULLS ARE F*UCKING RETARDED.

I'm afraid you don't know much about dogs or those breeds.
Any dog is capable of snapping at any minute. It all depends on how the dog is treated and raised.
Overall, Pit Bulls (I've owned before) and Dobermans (My sister owns several, and has small children) aren't any more dangerous than other large dogs.
The problem is all of the idiots out there who get these dogs and either abuse them or intentionally train them to be mean. Thus, the ignorant masses get a bad impression of the breed.
That's like saying "Why do we let Muslims in the country, they could set off a bomb any minute". That is not true. Just because a lot of terrorists today that are getting news coverage are Muslim, doesn't mean that all terrorists are Muslim (IRA, Timothy McVey, Unabomber), nor does it mean that all Muslims are terrorists.
If you are truly that concerned, I would suggest doing some actual research into the breeds and meeting with respected members of the breeding community for those animals. I'm sure you will be enlightened.

Wow....looks like you got your hand slapped on this one! I really can't add much to this discussion other than I agree with pretty much what everyone else is saying. Dogs require responsibilty much like a child. It is the owners' fault for the things you hear about in the news.
I believe that dogs have a "passion" for things. Certain dogs are instinctively more passionate about some things versus other breeds.
My twin brother is a K-9 trainer in the military and works with dogs all the time. I know that virtually any dog can be trained to do certain things. Some dogs are genetically bred for particular purposes. German Shepards for their extrodinary sense of smell and obedience, they can be great drug dogs and can be trained to attack. Dobermans for their protectiveness, they are make great gaurd dogs and can be trained to attack. Bloodhounds make great trackers, but lack the size to be good attack dogs. I'm sure they would attack if trained to do so, but were bred for not only their nose but the temperament as well. Pit Bulls...I'm not sure what the hell they were bred for but I'm sure they are passionate about something, and yes they can attack.
Without guidance and training, any dog can be bad. With evil training, they will be evil and aggressive. These large breed dogs have the power and strength to kill and thats the only reason you hear about them in the news. I've seen nasty, mean little weiner dogs and chihahuas too, but since they don't have the strength and power to kill, you'll never see a evil one of those on the news.
From my brother's experience I can tell you that the dogs he works with won't do anything without being commanded. He has even taught some how to "take a sh*t, boy!" and they run out and try whether they have to or not...LOL

No offense, but it does matter how well-mannered and well-raised they are. Some people prefer those types of dogs just out of personal taste and if they are trained well enough, then they can make the perfect pets. Others get them because they also make great guard dogs. With the proper training they can be made to be sociable with humans and other dogs without snapping, biting or barking (too much) and be used as a guard dog at the same time.

Well, some do have kind hearts! I know many that are sweethearts! But anyway, some people like to have a dog with a scary reputation because they make great guard dogs! In addition, yes, it DOES matter how nice and well raised and well mannered they are. And some just have better attitudes than others. ANY dog could snap at a human. It's just how animals are, they're extremely un-predictable!

I wonder the same thing. Here's the truth: Dobermans and German Shepherds, etc are what are known as "working dogs". They historically have been used by Law Enforcement and other agencies because of their fearless protective tendancies. They also have wonderful intelligent qualities that make them great family pets and even "babysitters" but there is nothing I have ever found to redeem pitbulls except that they, too, are God's creatures. We humans have gone on to breed and use them strictly for their intimidating aggression that is too often indiscriminating. It's haphazard and a dangerous feature. I recently went to the local animal shelter and out of 50 dogs, 45 were pitbulls. The individuals who have done this over time have never respected the fact that they were using the dogs for wrong reasons nor did they ever ultimately care about the animal. It is sad but I'm with you. I have never been able to warm up to them because of this. I was walking down my street one morning to get the bus to go to work and the next thing I know, I have the drunk neighbor's pitbull hanging off my hip. There was no one around to help me so I remembered what I had learned from Dog Obedience class (when I had 2 German Shepherds) and looked at himand told him "NO! Bad Dog!" I had to say this loudly a few times but he was "shamed" enough to let go. I went right to the local police to complain. This same dog used to get loose in our neighborhood and bite the little kids that were out playing and he would attack the pets that were out that day; those times were when his drunk drug addicted owner would be passed out and the dog(s). They seem to be a volatile breed with a vicious streak usually in the wrong hands.

I have owned Dobermans for 17 years.
My last dobe had his CGC title with AKC. He was a certified therapy dog. He would never have snapped at a human.
But I put in lots oftime and effort to train him. He started out with a "I want to meet and greet the world" attitude so he was perfect for what we did.
I have others that were not that social. But in all the years I have owned them I have never had one of mine bite anyone.
Becasue I am a responsible owner and do not put my dog in the situation where it could happen.
Any dog can bite. They all have teeth.
I work as a trainer I have had one bite it was from a toy poodle.
So I would rather work with almost any pitt bull over a toy poodle.

The dogs aren't going to hurt the children unless they are trained to attack by some cruel, idiot human. Most dogs will view a child as a young, vulnerable member of the pack and will defend the wee baby. Pit Bulls and Dobermans are fine until idiot humans get them.

I am sorry to say it depends on the upbringing of the dog, if the dog was teased and hurt as a pup then yes they will turn on you, but if you have given them a lot of love and affection whilst growing up then there is a 0% chance that the dog will turn on his loved ones.
Now tell me what is a person supposed to do with all the dobermans and pitbulls, put them down I don't think so, everyone to their own liking

pits can be some of the best dogs that you can own. dobies make excellent pets, too. theyre only mean because that's how people raise them to be. when owning one of these breeds, its very important to not allow any biting or growling at a young age, as it can encourage them later on. however, this is not unlike any other breed in that, if youre a good owner, youll have a good dog

Any dog can bite and any dog can be dangerous if mishandled..
This is why kids have to be taught to _always_ be cautious around dogs they don't know, not just dogs of a certain type. Any dog approached the wrong way or that has it's buttons pushed can act out aggressively.
