My son followed this with the fact that God asks us to love everyone including our enemies. He said... "the Devil is our biggest enemy. Shouldn't we love him and pray for him?"

Hmmmm....

That's sooo sweet!! If it were me, I wouldn't break your sons spirit by explaining that the devil is a hopeless nemesis. The fact that he recognizes that the devil is the enemy and that individuals all need prayer shows that he is on the right path and you have done a very good job!! Keep up the good work, wish more children were filled with the type of spirituality that your son is!

He's not a slow child, I'll give you that. But theoretically yeah, I suppose you could pray for "the devil" to become a good...err being? I don't really believe in anything like that, but generally if someone "goes off the rails" as such and starts to do bad thing, a religious person would generally say "I'll pray for you", an hopefully whichever god is being prayed to can turn them back on the right road. Same could be said for the devil I suppose.

The devils, like the good angels, were created with free will. (Just as we are). However, unlike us, when an Angel or a devil wills something, it is forever. They do not and cannot "change their mind". So, therefore, Lucifer and the other bad devils, once they chose evil, are forever evil. There can be no repentance in Hell. The damned can be sorry they are sufffering, but they can never be sorry they offended God. They can never thank anyone for praying for them, they can only try to drag them into hell with them.

One uses the power of prayer to relieve suffering, to turn the hard hearted to God, to ask for graces, etc. The reprobate in hell are incapable of sorrow, of thanksgiving, and cannot receive graces. It is futile to pray for the devils. However, it is sweet for your daughter to think along these lines as we reallly should pray for our enemies. But simply tell her to pray for people who are still living and for the souls of the dead, but that the devils are beyond hope. Just let her know the devil cannot be helped and would not thank her for trying. Peace.

Intelligent Question...

In Bhagavad Gita it is stated that a Learned Person sees Every one in the equal platform of "Soul" or as "Children's of God" or "Parts and Parcels of God". Even the Enemy, even the animals, even the insects.
For Such a Person actually there is no Enemy. All are his friends.
But Bhagavad Gita also states that still one should differentiate in their dealings according to the position of each Soul.

Just as we must follow and serve the Learned Sages, we must develop friendly relationship with our Peers, and we must have compassion on the Ignorant people and must avoid Devil minded people.

We Should love every created being, even the non-living, as it is created by God and thus Gods Property. Hate-red should be uprooted from our hearts. But when associating with different creatures you have to use intelligence.
Just like though you should love all animals, does not mean you should try to befriend a Poisonous Snake or Tiger. They may not have same love for you. Similarly Devil minded people will only take you away from God and thus make your life more miserable. So one must avoid such persons. Praying to them will only lead to more misery as they themselves are in very miserable condition.

There are some really messed up answers coz people dont take children seriously. I dont think you should encourage your son to love the devil. But he could pray for the devil... as long as he understands that the devil is evil etc. This is a really difficult one.

lol thats a good question for a seven year old!

(ur sons clever to understand that!)

But not u shouldn't I mean u never pray for angels so why pray for the devil, when god asks us to love everyone including our enemies I think he just means humans!

But it's good he understands this it means he will probably go on the right path and treat his enemies with respect too, you should be proud!!!

sure.
He sounds very insightful, it seems rare that children delve into the unknown, he seems very spiritual. it's a wonderful gift.
gather his questions and help him find the answers. tell him that the answers he finds are for him alone though, (meaning that there are so many beliefs and points of view, that no 2 people can usually agree on answers like he wants.) you can have him talk to pastors, preachers, anyone that could help him along the way.
definitely nurture this in him, you are a lucky parent to have such a thought invoking and inspiring son. having questions is the best part of life, write them down and track the various answers he receives, it would be interesting to see how it helps him develop as a person and leads him down the "path to enlightenment".
so yes, tell him to pray for whom ever he feels needs it, even if it is the devil!!!

Sounds like an innocent, childish thing to me... but I believe that the choice between praying for the devil or the kid who beats him up would differentiate... the devil isn't a being we see everyday so it isn't as hard to recognize him as an enemy... but more then likely your son wouldn't be asking to pray for the kid who took his lunch money, so it wouldn't be the same principle... but this is just my opinion

Your Son has posed a very good and very smart question, I think he may be right, be proud of him. I see the Devil not as a being, but as a summing up of all things evil in the world. If you show an Evil person love and compassion they may shy away from there misdoings and follow the right path.
