The problem is that the Scottish media underestimate sides that they haven't heard of and clubs that don't come from big European leagues like England, Spain, Italy, Germany and France. Last year Dundee Utd lost ot a Finnish team, the year before that Dunfermline lost to an Icelandic team and about 5 years ago Aberdeen lost to Bohemians of Ireland. Each time the media hyped up the Scottish teams chances by wrongly writing off the other side as no hopers. They weren't bad teams, but the Scottish side would have won if they had taken the tie seriously enough. Scottish teams generally do well against bigger sides in Europe. Remember Celtic beat Barcelona and Liverpool on the way to the UEFA Cup Final and Hearts beat Basle recently.

Hearts are where they are on merit, Gretna less so. In the away ties next week, both sets of supporters will be welcomed in Athens and Derry by the local populace. Safe in the knowledge that it's true football fans desending on their city/town. Not a bunch of backward hooligans that come with ANY english club. Hearts never got a drubbing! Our under strength team struggled, yes, but we took the lead and were pipped late on. We've beaten Bordeaux and Basle( a team that spanks english teams at home) in away ties. Do you have a clue about football? Or do you fill the void in your life by talking rubbish? No point asking for the points is there??

Hearts result was concerning, Gretna just highlights the issue of letting the cup runners up into europe, they are not good enough to play in scottish premier then they shouldn't play in europe. Millwall were in similar position a few years ago in England. Gretna won 4 games and got to play in Europe nonsense.

If you ignore Rangers and Celtic then the answer has to be "yes." I was really hoping Hearts would do something-even if they got eliminated in the Group stage but it is going to take an unbelievable performance to make it now.The rest are just a joke as they have shown us in the last few years. There was a time when the Scots clubs were respected in Europe but apart from the Old Firm not anymore.

Unfortunately this has been happening for a few years now and this has shown in the National teams' showings. We are a second rate nation when it comes to football and it is mainly through the vast money spent by Rangers and Celtic buying second rate foreigners - there is no way forward for the young aspiring talent in Scottish football because they cannot force their way into the larger teams. Yes we have been a two horse country for several years but surely/hopefully we can come good again (although I don't think I'll see it in my lifetime - and I'm middle aged11).

Its the domination of the Old Firm that has made the rest of the Scottish teams no-hopers in Europe. The average gulf between the Old Firm and 3rd place is usually 20+points so how can they expect to compete when even the Old Firm find it hard!

I think our standing is about right. While other footballing nations have taken the game forward our game is still in the hands of imbeciles have have actually presided over the regression of our game to what I can only describe as hit and hope, it breaks my heart but we produce the worst standard of football to watch in Europe

The idiot little englander children here know nothing of Scottish club success in Europe.
Or anything else really.
No, it was not an auspicious start.
It wasn't a disaster though and Scotland might be represented for a while yet.

Scottish football is really just Celtic and Rangers - Rangers had a bad season last season so they are not in Europe.
