most airlines will accept small animals under 25 pounds in a carrier and kept below your seat. I have taken my schipperke on many trips and it went fine. Though may i point out they charge you like 100 to 125 each way. I think for that price they should get their own seat

Only take them as carry on items. I was flying one time and I was looking out of the window and a luggage loader accidently dropped the cat kennel and the door opened. The cat darted off and no one made an announcement to try to tell the owners before we took off. So I am assuming that they found out once we landed and their cat wasn't there. Anything can happen so be careful. If possible I would drive, they won't eat, drink, or go to the bathroom the entire trip since they are nervous but at least you will know they are safe. My cats travel in cars all the time and even though they are calm in the car they still don't eat or drink or anything so yours will be fine.

Airlines are safe, but expensive.

You have to have a hardshelled kennel to transport them in. Also, if you MUST fly them, make sure the flight is no more than 3 hours.

Then again, I think from California to Ohio is around 4 hours on a flight (if not a bit more), so you might just want to drive them there.

We moved from Ohio to Las Vegas (and back) with our cats by renting an RV. They seemed to enjoy the ride after the initial shock of the vehicle moving.

My cousin flies her cat all the time. HE does fine with it. They fly from Texas to California and back a few times a year. He flies right next to her in a carrier.
