my boyfriend has a piece of white furniture....it is one of those 'hall/doorway' coat hook things with a bench. It is white in color. NOTHING in my apartment is white! It's ALL wood. Is there a way to varnish it to make it look, 'woody'?? help!

Absolutely, there is something you can do to change the appearance of this item of furniture. First step is to go to your local hardware/paint store, they will give you all the correct advise on what products you will need to strip the old paint off so that you have a new surface to either varnish, stain or give a distressed look too your b/f hallway furniture. Paint stripping isnt always easy and sometimes you can get a gentle sandblast to remove all the paint especially if there are parts of the fruniture that have intricate turns. Best bet is your local paint/hardware store, they will give you the best products to get the job done.

U have lots of otpions. U can either go to a brown tone or to a similar tone to the woods, or u can faux finish on top of your white to make it look like wood. U just have to find a person who knows how to work with lacquer finishes. The smell will be strong but this can make it look like wood overall and not have to paint it. U don't have to strip the white off when u faux finish on top of the white. U also can do it with varnish but the process takes lot longer and it is not as efficient as lacquer finishes. It will give u the more of wood finish as lacquer finish will. U can strip the white paint, but this will take more time and u have to deal with safety issue because the solvents are very strong. Ur skin has to be protected, it make sure other furniture and ur floor is well protected or it will start damaging them also if you get it on them. Lots of work when u strip, after u scrape u have to sand again so when u apply the stain and finish that u will get a smooth finish.

The white hall bench might add a little color since everything is wood . If you try to change it you may ruin it . If it's in the hallway how many other pieces of furniture that's wood are there ? Too much wood in one area gives it a cold feeling . Try and work with the white . Good Luck

As long as it's been painted white since it was bought then yes. Just get paint stripper, stain and varnish from the hardware store.

yes, if the furniture is painted, use paint remover to remove the white color then varnish it with desired color. if the white color is varnished, you should use wood bleach to remove the color then apply varnish or wood stain of desired color.

If it is wood, maybe you can strip it. If it is laminate, a light sanding then paint should work. Nothing is like real wood, but there are techniques to make faux wood at the paint stores.

If it is painted I'm sure you could go to a hardware store and find paint remover. Or check out some home improvement web sites for tips. Like HGTV.

you can buy paint thinner. take the piece outside and apply the thinner, you will need to a scraper and wire brush (along with some old rags) to get all the paint off and it is a little time consuming but if you and your boyfriend do it together it could potentially be fun, after you are done getting the paint off you are free to stain it.

Hmmm...everything is possible. Just try it! Just dip it in about five gallons of varnish, see what happens...
