In Iraq in 03 - 04 all kinds of people would pick up the expended brass... melt it down and make other stuff out of it. I suspect much the same thing is going on there...

An expended round cartridge has almost no value and is of less concern to the soldiers who fired it... I know the two times I fired my rifle in Iraq... the last thing on my mind was policing my brass... but I'm sure there's a tree hugger out there that is going to be upset about that...

It's possible some middle eastern scavengers pick them up. Perhaps some more diligent soldiers would pick their own up...though I imagine there aren't that many out there...
I wonder what an empty cartridge would be worth...scrap metal? or resell on the weapons market?
