Yes.
Look at the athletes, well conditioned highly motivated, when anyone talks about courage boxing comes to the fore. Whenever comparisons are made its usually a boxing analogy.
Is it a brutal sport yes, should it be banned, maybe, but as long as humans are animals with a thirst for survival boxing will always exist. Simply because its an extension of mans animal instinct.

Boxing, also called pugilism, Western Boxing, prizefighting or the sweet science is a sport in which two participants of similar weight fight each other with their fists in a series of one to three-minute intervals called "rounds" Points are awarded for clean, solid blows to the legal area on the front of the opponent's body above the waistline, with hits to the head and torso being especially valuable. The fighter with the most points after the scheduled number of rounds is declared the winner.
It's a real sport and it takes a lot of dedication and time to learn it. Also it's a very hard sport and you get old quickly.

Ok.
Boxing is a sport for several reasons:
1- It was created in the late 18 century.
2- Their matches are not 'stories' like the wrestling. They are not fixed (well, the 99% is real) :)
3- Its fighters are real athletes in the whole word
4- It have organization, rules, policies...
5- It's history in the entire World.

boxing is without a doubt a sport...it's human competition at it's very core...you are in there alone, no one else to help you...some people debate the sports tag because of the presence of judges...but they are there to determine a winner when the event ends...otherwise it would go on until someone was seriously hurt or killed...
i would have given anything to have seen those marathon fights with Dempsey, Marciano, Pep, Robinson, etc

It is considered a sport for classification reasons. But I think it goes beyond typical sportsman like competition. Their is an element of primal instincts that emerges. This is more like battle than anything to me.
Like hunting is considered a sport. I think this title doesn't show enough respect for what is taking place.
