He prays to God because He has become man in the flesh, humbling Himself to take upon the likeness of a servant. Therefore, He must call upon God to work miracles according to God's own will. As long as He remained in God and did God's will, God worked miracles through Him, and in doing so, Jesus glorified His Heavenly Father.
However, His authority is still recognized, as He could still command demons to leave people in His short time on Earth. But, He laid down all His authority and humbled Himself, so much so that He endured humiliation to the point of death on a cross, to save humanity by paying the price for the world's sin.
Although Jesus is the Son of God, He prays to God because He wants God to strengthen Him for carrying out God's will as it is, for He must remain a blameless man for his whole life, that He might save the world His Father so loves by His death.
For the question on why He can't perform miracles Himself, I think you are thinking about what one of the criminals said to Him at the cross. The criminal said "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!" In this case, He was not to perform the miracle of saving Himself, because His mission was to conquer death, which He did 3 days after His death, as He said He would.
Isn't that the greatest miracle of all?

There are two ways that Christians think of God.
Oneness and Trinitarian.
Oneness believe that there is One God, but that He has tree offices (three ways of doing thing). So Jesus prayed to His Father as an example to us.
Trinitarians think that there are tree persons in one perfect accord. God is the Father. Jesus is the Son. The Holy Spirit is His Holy Ghost. Jesus and the Holy Spirit put them selves under the Fathers authority. The Father showed Jesus what He wanted to do and gave Jesus all power and authority to do it. And Jesus did His Father's will at all times (perfectly) for the glory of His Father. I think the Holy Ghost is under both their authority, but He always works invisible that the Father may be glorified by the Son.
I hope this is clear enough, it is a difficult thing.

To say that Jesus is equivalent to God wouldn't be correct statement, He is God. John 1:1 says: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
God is a Triune God, referred to as the Godhead, with three distinct personalities. Each part of the Godhead has different jobs and tasks, but they are all part of the same Being.
Praying is nothing more than communicating, talking to God. Jesus would pray to the Father to ask for strength, wisdom, and spiritual guidance.
Jesus also prayed as a lesson to us. We need to pray to God in all things, at all times. Unfortunately, most people turn to God as a last resort, when they're flat on their backs, and have no other place to turn. What Jesus was teaching us is that we should always pray to God first, and ask for His guidance.

Jesus is the living word of God, God is the creator, while Jesus was in the flesh He prayed to the creator, the Father. It is hard for some people to understand the concept of the Trinity, but we aren't talking about a human, we are talking about a Supreme Spiritual Being, each of us have different sides, we are a son/daughter, brother/sister, wife/husband. We have many titles, and represent different sides to others.
Post Script: I see that some doesn't believe in the Trinity. I can only say what is in the Bible. But in John 1:1 it reads
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word WAS God.
Jesus also said, if you have seen me then you have seen my Father I tell you today you walk with The Father

Jesus is not god. he prays to his Father Jehovah. read ps 83 verse 18. remember when Jesus was baptized Jehovah came down like a dove and said this is my son. you can not pray to yourself. Jesus also said the can not do anything without his Father Jehovah God. when Jesus did a miracle he prayed to his Father Jehovah. remember God cannot die but Jesus the son did die. so Jesus is not God Almighty, he is the son of God

Jesus , I think gave us the answer when He prayed to the Father just before calling Lazarus from the tomb. He says to the effect that He always knew that God heard Him, but he prayed so the people would believe who he was. (as He always gave the glory to Father God). See John11:41.

Jesus prayed for several reasons. First and foremost, to talk to God the Father--Prayer is simply communication.
Second, Jesus prayed because when He was on earth, there were "certain things the Father has hidden" from Him, and so Jesus would Pray to ask for guidance and help.
Third, Jesus Prayed to show us how to pray so we would learn from His ways.

Good Questions ! some of them even claim that Jesus is God !
If he is God How Can he die ? and before his birth and after his death who's taking care of his Kingdom ?
Listen : Jesus is noT god Nor god's son , Jesus is a Propet Messemger from God , like all other prophets and messengers before and after him .
And I want to let you know that there is no devout charitians after the departer of Jesus as they switched and changed his message the bible .

I suppose it was a way of communicating with god. According to the bible he did perform miracles himself. I don't believe in god or Jesus and think the bible is just a book of stories, but if you haven't read it then i recomend you do as its something interesting to read.

Jesus is both the Son of God and the Son of Man. From our perspective as fellow men, this is seemingly paradoxical. Through Faith, this duality is acceptable. As humans, we can not understand all aspects of God. It is easier for us to see him as the son of a man, and to follow his teachings and examples as if he were a man. Perhaps, after our own deaths, this will become understandable.
