Can writing code really be considered engineering? I've seen high school drop-outs who read C++ for Dummies get software engineering jobs. I've never seen a mechanical engineer who didn't go to a university.

You don't need to go to Le Cordon Bleu to be a Cook.
As long as you know the tools and skills of your trade, then that's what you are.

Also the difference in the tolerance in education may have to do with the nature of the job. Mechanical engineering, done wrong can put people's lives in danger. Thus, a degree is a sort of safeguard. If you screw up a couple of lines of code, nobody is going to die. (Unless it's medical software, I suppose)

I'm sorry but reading C++ for dummies is not sufficient to be a software engineer. And yes, it is engineering. I'm a computer science major, it's not that easy. It's not hard, but it's not easy. I'm starting to take a bunch of Calc courses though cause I want to study physics. Programming has bored me!

In the early days of every profession, the demand was so high that college grads were not sought to fill the need. 100 years ago, the majority of Medical Doctors had no college education.

The trend for Software Engineers today is for degree and advance degrees.

It's just a name....... I've got friends who are "Sales Manager" but in fact they are just an ordinary "Salesman". They still need to walk around whole day and try to sell stuff. You probably just need a high school cert to be a "Sales Manager". I think software engineer is just a fancy name for a programmer...I was one with just a diploma .... wonder what I'll be next when I complete my degree Muahahahahhaha....

Yes they are. The difference i think your talking about would be a qualified software engineer and a unqualified software engineer.

Hence I see plenty of unqualified mechanics they are refered to normaly as trainee mechanics. But still refered to as mechanical engineers

yes we can call them engineers
they were classified lately as engineers
an engineer is a person who has the highest knowledge in technical problems . technical problems might be in buildings or electricity , even software and hardware, so why not?
although I think the word (IT= information technologist ) is better in disscribing this job.

The structure of programming is protocol but the affect is the same. Such as genetic engineering. This is construction.

i define engr as someone who make our lives easier...example.. they construct bridges and road..design telecommunication..etc.. etc.. its not on the degree i believe.. its on what they do to for our own benefits..
