I understood that editing is as described in a previous answer and that checking the grammar, spelling, page set up, printing errors and so on is called proofreading.
Am I right or is there a fuzzy area in between?

Since the advent of electronic page layout definitions have changed but we now differentiate by saying that Proof Reading happens to final copy or layout and searches for errors such as orphans and widows or incorrect cutlines with illustrations. Editing on the otherhand happens earlier on in the production cycle and consists of working through a manuscript to correct errors of grammar, syntax, spelling and style.

So you are partially correct... and the fuzzy area? Well, just "sloppy" definitions really as the process of publishing has moved away from one run and governed by members of a closed guild and towards something more open and democratic.

Proofreading is checking for the spelling, the periods, the indentions at the beginning of a paragraph, etc.
Editing is changing the wording of a sentence. Adding a word/sentence....deleting something...switching stuff around

Proofreading is more like a spell check whereas when editing even content is at risk. I see proofreading as a lesser form of editing..

Editing is changing the content into a more fluid flow of words. Proofreading is for grammatical and punctuation.

Proofreading you are looking for mistakes, editing you are fixing the mistakes or you are taking out non essentail info, changing the story

Here's a slightly different take:

Revising is done by the writer.
Proofreading is done by the writer.
Editing is done by someone else prior to publication.
