yep 65 of them to be exact. Its a great joy but also a large responsibility - sticking to deadlines, editing, supporting the book after its printed, giving lectures, etc.

It happens, but the marketplace for new titles is contracting because people prefer television and the Internet instead of buying books. At the same time, the number of authors is rising, because all the baby-boomers are retiring and finding time to put pen to paper. So, it's increasingly difficult to get published, and most especially if you're a first-time author with no proven track record.

The vast number of authors who can't get published makes the vanity publishing industry grow, charging for the satisfaction.

If you have written a book - try sending the 1st 3 chapters to agents interested in your area of writing.

Look up "micropublishing" and read the Salon.com article from 1999 -- it will come up in a Google search.

You can have printed as little as one copy of a hardbound or softcover book. It's great!

You can also publish as PDF documents, either open or restricted (can't be further copied; can be time-limited: see the http://www.nypl.org pages on eBooks)

My husband has had 2 novels published and did not pay for them, but he struggled for years and has a huge pile of rejection letters to prove it.
