Either your own life or human life in general.
If you think it is a popularity contest, what's the prize and who's the judge? Please remember you are in a popularity contest.
If you think it's not, please feel free to rant on generally or specifically, and in as derogatory terms as you like, about people who behave as though it is one, not worrying in the least how unpopular this might make you.

i don't think life is a popularity contest because if it is 6.4 billion people are in the running. I think life is more of a 'who can live up to the society/media propaganda contest'. Our society and the media tells us; we should be this rich, we should accomplish this, we must be this thin and look this beautiful. However most of us cant live up to these high inhumane standards due to our standards of living. Such propaganda causes greed, selfishness and discrimination. Sadly unfortunate people unable to be apart of this relentless 'rat race' and are forced to step aside for those able initiating areas such as poverty, crime etc.

High school is a popularity contest - student counsel, prom queens, etc., but adulthood isn't that extreme. Sure, brown-nosers get promotions when they don't necessarily deserve it, but look at Bill Gates. He was an unpopular geek, but now he's the richest man in the world.

life is a popularity contest if you believe it is. The prize is lots of numbers on your mobile phone, and the headache of 'keeping in touch' with people that you don't give two hoots about (apart from the fact it's important they remember you) and the judge? its your ego of course!

In real life, sad but true, it is a popularity contest. Inter-personal relationships count a lot towards your individual success (among a group of friends, in an office environment etc). Heard the saying? - it's WHO you know and not WHAT you know!

na na baby u got it all wrong, life is not about how good you are to others but rather about how powerful you seem to others and that is why even the most disgraceful and disgusting assholes get all the praise, you see you can do whatever you want just as long as you are successful

It might be when you're young, but as you get older you don't give a hoot about what other people think. It's called maturity.
