I have heard that some couples change a portion of the traditional wedding vows, replacing "'till death do us part" with "for as long as our love shall last."

Have you heard of this? What do you think?

that's pathetic. That's like saying, "we already know this marriage won't last"

Those "new vows" contradict the entire point of marriage - to be with the person you love for the rest of your life. Marriage isn't casual, it isn't dating. It's a commitment. If you are unwilling to commit, than don't get married. There are already enough broken marriages/families in the world.

Sadly, I believe as a culture Marriage is not taken too seriously.
Changing vows is not a bad thing ~ i.e. Omitting the obey vow.
Marriage is much more than love. It takes a lot of sand ...
Changing this phraseology is allowing an easy way out before you're even in.

The vows are in a written form only to helps us to put our intentions into words at the time of the wedding ceremony. When you read the written vows, you should deeply feel the words in your heart.
Altering vows is acceptalbe as it potrays the actual feelings of the wedding couple and this is actually a good foundation for the marriage.

Marriage vows should not include an "out" clause. Of course all marriages don't last; but when you enter a marriage with the plan for the way out, the meaning of marriage is degraded.

Vows can be changed. Actually, in todays society -- the latter makes more sense with the divorce rates. The couple should say what they believe in their hearts.
