Editing is when you're just fixing grammar, but revision is when you rewrite things.

Sometimes people use these terms interchangeably but there is a difference.

To revise something suggests that there was something seriously wrong with the content of what was written and that the whole thing has to have major alteration.

To edit something should mean that the writer knows what he/she is doing, but needs someone to check it through, delete some unnecessary parts, suggest where there could be additions and so on. The person who does this for them is editing their work.
In general editing is less drastic than revision.
Another meaning of revision means looking again at the work you did during the year so that you will remember it for an exam - but that is in a different context from the 2 above.

It helps to think of it this way: break down "revision," and you get "re" (as in "do over") and "vision" (the focus of your work). A revision implies that somewhere along the line, you lost focus on key issue in your work and you have to revisit your thought process to see where you went astray.
On the other hand, editing suggests minor corrections to spelling, grammar, phrasing, and all that without implying that your main thesis is flawed.
So basically, a revision is a "do over" and editing more like a "salvage job"

Editing is to alter the structure of things to make it better.
For example:
Altering the structure of a sentence and/or selecting the more appropriate word to make a better sentence.

Revision is to alter the content of things to make it better.
For example:
Adding or deleting a part of a composition (books, songs, etc.), or sometimes altering the underlying ideas (or structure) in order to make it better, or to express something better.

Sometimes, editing also require revision. So editing have a broader sense than revising.

As I understand it, revision means changing the underlying structure or the substance of the paper, it's more involved than editing. Editing means just fixing things like sentence structure and fixing grammar and spelling.

When you edit you dont change the structure of the paper you just fix spelling and grammar mistakes, even if that requires rewording a sentence for grammar purposes. Revision is changing the structure, rewording to sound differently or getting rid of whole paragraphs........things like that.

Editing means making changes in a written (or any type of) work in such a way that basic theme remains intact, while revision means you can change the whole theme and make significant changes.
