in laymen's terms, it means your perception of yourself within the perceived social structure you belong in or may be desirous to be part of. It is a way to set your goals and assuming your rightful place.

Sociological imagination is an awareness of the relationship between an individual and the wider society.The awareness allows for comprehension of the link between the immediate,personal social world that surrounds and helps to reform......This is in line with M.C Wright s position.

The expression comes from the work of the late C. Wright Mills. He believed that sociology should be the science to link biography to the events of history and current times. It's a step away from "being the right person" or "being born at the right time."

History can bring certain people to greatness; great people can make historic eras memorable.

But, events tend to be covered by a veneer of prejudices, espectations, and tradition. The "sociological imagination" is used to wipe away the veneer and to see things as they are.
