I would have to say it was 17 years ago. We were having my in-laws over for dinner and had just put the turkey in the oven. My father in law called to say that he had to take mother in law to hospital as she was having trouble breathing. She died that day!!!!

My mom died Dec. 11 from a car accident. The following year during the holidays my family was kinda lost. We decided to spend Thanksgiving at my sister's house, someplace new. She bought a box of wine and a few cases of beer, and I think Dad brought Scotch. We were pretty bored until my Dad asked my sister if she had any dice. For the next several hours he tought us how to play Craps, and we gambled and drank like champions. I'll never forget how he pulled us together as a family that night. It could've been so miserable and sad, but it was actually the nicest Thanksgiving we ever had.

1998 when I had Thanksgiving with my son and husband. My husband loves to cook up an awesome meal. I had my sister and dad over. Then it dawned on me that my grandmother and and my husband's mom who passed away with in days of each other were the reason we were all together. So I had made that Thanksgiving kind of like a memorial for them to celebrate them, I was very thankful for them both.

My most memorable Thanksgiving was 1996. The Tuesday before my mother fell and cooking dinner was left to me. I've never cooked a Turkey before.
I've done it every year since......Miss you Mom.

When I was a boy, Mom's and Dad's families both had dinners, and I was at one place a while and the other place a while. One of my paternal cousins and I felt like men when we were allowed to go on the annual hunt with Dad's brothers. I was age nine when I was given a .22 rimfire rifle. I beat all of the grown men, except Dad's baby brother in shooting.

When we were little, our family had a nice dinner early in the day, around 11 am or so, and afterward, we drove up to the cabin we have in the Mendocino Nat'l Forest and cut Christmas trees. It was so fun having all of our family, grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles, doing that with us. It's one of my favorite memories.

We stopped celebrating these last few years since it stopped being a family event and was just another day.
When I was younger though, my ma did manage to catch the turkey on fire. We had the fire department over which was really cool.
