I have a friend who has just been shopped by (we think his ex g/f) - he's already on bail because of defending himself towards a physical attack by her (long story). He has been claiming benefits for many years - he has rheumatoid arthritis in his knees which he is on medication for, but has also been working because he can't put food in his son's mouth just off the benefits. So he's been blagging for a very understandable reason.

He's just been written to by the authorities about this and he's in a very harsh position.

Now, I have heard of people getting caught and paying off what they owe in order to stay out of prison. Is this a possibility? If so I might be able to help him as he really doesn't need this right now or ever. Anything anyone out there knows about how we can get round this will be very useful and much appreciated.

Please help!!

It is possible to live off benefits as we have all had to at some time or another. There is no excuse for 'blagging' - I'm sure your friend has been getting his rent paid and everything and earning money without paying any tax.

I suggest your friend sorts himself out - If he can't put food in his son's mouth, how does he think he is going to pay off what he owes in fraudulent claims? By doing some more cash in hand work?

Sorry even on benefits he should be able to feed his son, people on benefits are usually better off than those of us working. If you take into consideration all the rent and council tax benefits they receive, not to mention the free dental and prescriptions they are entitled to he should be better off, and his child should have free school meals.
I am sorry for his plight but he has it coming, I struggled and brought up two children for a while on benefits with no maintainence from their father, he needs to learn to budget better.

Was your friend claimimg all the correct benefits to begin with? If he has RA and cannot work, then he should have been on disability benefits, which don't prevent people who are disabled from working. He needs to speak with Citizens Advice and they may be able to refer him to a lawyer who will give him 30 minutes free advice

Had he been a Kosovo refugee they would have said nothing, give him £5000 , and told him to buy a car with it.That sounds cynical and bitter I know . Unfortunately there is a grain of truth in it.
