You have to have both, because for all the good you do, some bad had to come out of it. Likewise, for all the bad we do, good actually does come out of it as well.

But a lot of the permanent effects that we have, are negative in nature. (eg. destruction of species, loss of habitat, loss of biodiversity).

I'd score it as

Optimists: 1 Pessimists: 2.5

I think environmental pessimists are communists that need to get a job and work for their paycheck.
Technological optimists need to read about Pandora's Box once a year.

i think that everything will work itself out. Man's machines might win, for a while, but if it's a fight between nature and man, nature has a higher rate of success, Man vs. Hurricane? Hurricane. Man vs. Tornado? Tornado. Man vs. Tsunami? Tsunami. Man vs. rain forest? Man. Man vs. fire starting lightning? fire starting lightning. Can we really destroy the world?
Or can we only use up all the use-full stuff, kill off a few hundred species of plant and animal life, and forever change the environment for the worse?
