Well, at the moment the issue just involves "medical" marijuana. Studies have shown that in states that allow medical marijuana, the use in teenagers declined by 10%. (As to why, I don't know.) And I have known many people to have benefitted from marijuana. So, in that aspect I would say yes. However, in the thought that it should be legal and distributed like cigarettes? Well, that's another issue.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First of all, marijuana was legal in this country until 1919, when Texas was the first to take action, and by 1940 it was illegal throughout the country. However, this came about with great help from William Randolph Hearst who, in order to help his logging industry battle the hemp industry, printed false articles about marijuana, and marijuana induced crime/violenece in his newspapers.
Also, drugs are suppose to be illegal because of the harm that they do to the user and those around the user. But with little evidence to site any physical, mental or social problems. And no conclusive evidence that says marijuana induces violence. There is little reason here why marijuana should be outlawed. (Also, one study found that drivers under the influence or marijuana are 76% less likely to be involved in an accident where someone is seriously injured or killed.)
Marijuana also has a known beneficial effect for those suffering from appetite loss, glaucoma, nausea, pain (to an extent), and spasticity. It also shows potential evidence for efficacy when used to treat; anxiety, arthritis, dystonia, insomnia, microbes, and Tourette's.
side note: And marijuana has come damn close to being legal. President Carter tried for nationwide decriminalization of marijuana during his presidency. Supporters estimated that marijuana would be legal within a few short years if he suceeded. (unfortunately though he did not, and no serious attempt at national decriminalization has been tried since)
so YES, it should be legalized.
If it will help bring down the illegal trading of drugs, and if the government has quality control, like with tobacco.
That way people wont end up smoking real grass or tea leaves from a dud dealer.
It's a difficult subject though and needs a lot of debating.
I think it should be legalize and its sales taxed to ease the burden of all tax payers .
If it is owned and operated by the government the price would go down as the supply goes up.
Marijuana farming would create jobs .
I also think there should be laws prevent driving while high.
just like alcohol it impairs your judgment .
