the egg came first. i think it works like this--- one of the first multicelled organisms to roam the earth were the dinos. they carried on their legacy by eggs. maybe they developed and transited to the present day chicken so the egg came first

I so love this question. It makes evolution seem to be just like the fables of old...
"Once in a great while, when the positions of the stars are
just right, a seven-year-old rooster will lay an egg. Then,
along will come a snake, to coil around the egg, or a toad,
to squat upon the egg, keeping it warm and helping it to
hatch. When it hatches, out comes a creature called basilisk,
or cockatrice, the most deadly of all creatures. A single
glance from its yellow, piercing toad's eyes will kill both
man and beast. Its power of destruction is said to be so
great that sometimes simply to hear its hiss can prove fatal.
Its breath is so venomous that it causes all vegetation
to wither."
So... did the chicken or the egg come first? I say the egg because the fish came before the chicken, even if by mere moments or millions of millenia, and a fish could've laid eggs a moment before the birds were created. ^_~
Though, between the chicken and the chicken egg, I say the chicken came first, because, according to evolution (and akin to the story of the cockatrice), the chicken came from a lizard egg. Or, according to Christianity, still the chicken, because without the chicken, there can be no chicken egg.
In all seriousness, however, as a Christian, I say the parent came first, because without the fully developed parent, there could be no child to follow in its footsteps. And as a lover of science, I say the question is foolishness, because the answer could truly be "either" for both parties.

Which came first - the chicken or the egg? "The chicken" came first - in the sentence of the question. If the question is phrased differently, the answer is different.

Well, technically the egg must have come first because dinosaurs laid eggs and they were around before chickens.
But if you mean which came first, the chicken egg or the chicken; then, I believe, that the egg must've come first. The creature which came out of the egg would have been the first 'chicken' as we describe a chicken. The creature that laid that egg will have been an evolutionary ancester of the chicken, albeit very similar.

The egg!
Where did the egg come from?
It was lay by the chicken ancestor, since it wasn't a chicken it left the egg to be first!

The chicken came first. Very few animals can survive when they are first born or hatched (although there are exceptions) without a mother to provide and protect them.
From a religious point of view God created animals and fish and birds to fill the air.
But from any point of view, a baby chick coming out of an egg without a mother hen would not survive.

Too easy...the egg. Mutations within the chicken would have to be expressed through the genotype cells, ie DNA and thereby having the ability to be passed on to future generations. If a mutation occurred it would have had to be expressed within the egg to make future chickens. Any phenotype change may not be expressed in to the next generation without genetic alteration.

I am sure God came first, followed the world.
Then came Adam.
Then came Eve.
Then the apple tree.
Then came the snake.
I am pretty sure neither the chicken or egg came first.
During lunch, the scrambled egg came first followed by the roast chicken. Egg first???
