There are so many types of plates that your question is not specific enoungh.

i don't know if you mean the eating plates or the geographical plates, but i can tell you about the scientific one's uses. they are big pieces of flat rock-like structures floating on the earth's crust, nearly right above the sub layer MANTLE. they make movements due to the convectional currents from below the mantle, and so we get earthquakes and volcanoes.

putting food on . ornaments collector items. greeks smash them is joyful celebration. substitute for frisbee if plastic. to show off wealth if you use Dolton only. Stores use them to generate cash by selling them. to commorate events ie Prince Charles and Lady Di's wedding (sorry camela) If they are wooden plates I paint scenery on them. I stack them . I wash them I chip them, Some smash them and make mosaics with the broken pieces. Kids use them to leave snacks for Santa on them. I have seen people juggle them. Serve things on them

I eat off the stoneware and china, the decorative ones are on the wall, my cousin has a metal one in his head and the ones underground can move and cause earth quakes.

You break them. That is the ONLY use for plates.
