It is a strange way to say 'HEY I have control over my body,' prisoners in jail have done it for centuries. In a Society demanding so much control over a teenagers soul - - - imagine society condemning you for having sexual feelings or your political feelings - - - the only way that certain people feel they can have any measure of control is to hurt themselves first before others can do it to them.

People all over the world deal with self-injury, its just become very noticable in the US in the past few months because of musicans who have made it seem popular, news reports that have highlighted it, etc etc.

I'm sure that there are other forms of self punishment and mutilation that are also out there. Most cutters so it for a control thing or to punish themselves. Its very sad.

that's not true. i m an indian and my friend cuts herself coz' she broke up with her boyfriend. it's not only american teens,you know?
