A motel is called a motel because for every room there is a parking spot for your motor vehicle. A hotel is called a hotel because is purpose is to provide hospitality to the guest. Hotels tend to use bell hops to shuttle guests back and forth to the airport, so having a parking place for your car isn't priority. Hotels are widely used by the business traveler. Inns are places like bed and breakfast places. They are quaint and remote. People who are looking for a quite getaway usually choose an inn.

A hotel should be luxurious, with clean sheets. Motel is usually on high volume traffic pit stop. (with paper thin walls.
An Inn should be cosy and homely, with down home food. That's my 2 cents!
