Recently, I have really enjoyed listening to jazz on the radio and have seen several live bands.
I would really like to listen to more jazz, and I was wondering if somebody could tell me good album to "get me started"!! Perhaps a compilation of classic jazz songs, or one of the most famous jazz muscians albums... (Can you tell me the names of some of the older classic singers/players and modern ones?)
I really enjoy listening to Norah Jones, Jamie Callum and Amy Winehouse... Would they be considered jazz muscians?
THANKS for taking the time

I know how to ease you into jazz. I've been listening for a few years now, but can still remember the ones that helped me cross the bridge.

1. Miles Davis-Kind of Blue. This is the easiest album to listen to, and it's really, really good. I believe it's the best selling album in jazz history.

2.Grant Green-Matador. This album flows real nice. Grant Green plays guitar, an instrument your ear is used to hearing. Still one of my favorites.

3. Thelonious Monk-Monk's Dream. This album has grooves and hooks like a rock album, but it's jazz (really good jazz).

4. Wayne Shorter-Speak No Evil. I can't really say anything about this album, but if your still interested in jazz after the three albums I've suggested, your probably gonna love this album.

5.John Coltrane-A Love Supreme. Considered by many to be the most important recording in the history of all music, and great to listen to also.

That's my suggestion. Try them in the order I've listed them. If you go through them all and want more, I'd be happy to help (it wasn't to long ago someone did the same for me).

Happy listening.

Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Michael Buble, and Peter Cincotti are among my favourites.

Really the best thing you can do is visit different jazz oriented websites and see reviews and clip samples. This will enable you to choose singers you'd like to try.

When I got into jazz I used emule (a free music downloading program) to download songs. When you find someone you like you can go out and buy material if you choose or stick with the free material.

Best of luck.

The great thing about Jazz is that it is so versatile and comes in many forms!! Its been around now for over 100 years so it can be difficult to find the stuff that suits you!

Have a listen to some Ella Fitzgerald, I think you might like it.

For 'old' jazz you should try some Miles Davis - classic. For a contemporary twist on jazz have a listen to Polar Bear or Acoustic Ladyland.
