In the northern hemisphere (the U.S. and Europe), winter starts on the winter solstice, which falls on December 21 or 22 every year. The solstice is the day when the sun is farthest south or north from the earth. The other solstice is the first day of summer on June 21 or 22. In the southern hemisphere (Australia and South America), the seasons are reversed, and December 22 is the start of summer. Halfway between the solstices are the spring and fall equinoxes. The equinox is when night is the same length as day. The spring equinox is on March 20 or 21. So there are about 90 days of winter every year. But don't forget to add one day for a leap year!

Depends on the year (dates get funky with leap years) and whether you're above or below the equator, but at the winter solstice (shortest day of the year). In the northern hemisphere, it's dec 20 or dec 21.

winter solstice (depends which hemisphere you are in)
[if you live in the northern just swap the dates to suit your seasons]
Eg. I live in the southern so...
the solstice (winter starts) that occurs on or about June 21.
our summer occurs on or about December 22 (summer starts).
June - Shortest Day of the year
December - Longest Day of the year
(swap if needed)
