Because many people choose to live near the beautiful Great Lakes. They are like oceans, without the hurricanes, tidal waves, salt water, sharks, jellyfish, etc.

I live in Wisconsin, right in the middle of a continent. You don't get more inland than that. However, it is not fear of the ocean that makes me not want to live there. I could ask 'why are you afraid to move inland?' but i would naturally assume that you don't want to leave your friends, family, and way of life behind. Not for a better view anyway. Sharks don't bite often, we know this even WI, and we know that people drown all the time, sometimes in buckets even, according to the warnings on some buckets. so we'll rule drowning out. some people are afraid to fly, some poeple are just afraid that they can't afford it. But most of all, most people don't want to be up-rooted, especially not for a good view of some water.
but i'd bet it would be nice to live on the ocean, if it was possible. but it's not.

I live in Kansas but I'm not afraid of the ocean at all. I love going there-- I just don't want to live there b/c it's not "home." We get tornadoes. That sucks.

Water damage is worse than anything else, and all storms are stronger over water.
