Yes 6 weeks is too long, the kids get bored and restless and the parents get frantic. Its not so bad if you don't work, although you still have to find things for kids to do on the cheap, but if you have to work then you are in a position of having to find child care which can be difficult and expensive - schools should have some kind of club where the kids can go in school holidays where they are safe and being entertained for a few hours a day

6 weeks is fine for both students, teachers, and admin. staff to refresh well enough for the next hard working year ahead. It is also during this time that books etc and curriculums are prepared. Not at all easy work if you think how many curriculums, for how many different class levels have to be prepared. This also includes ordering or shipment of all books etcs too. This is just a small part or work in order to get the year going.
The holidays ensure both students and teachers get a good rest and and look forward to the next academic year. Remember too that teachers leave some weeks after students leave and return a couple of weeks before they start too in order to prepare the class, lessons for the weeks ahead and lots of other things.
You should enjoy your time with them, remember how many hours each day they are at school, these are special hours- you don't know what beautiful moments you miss! The teacher gets to experience this-you miss the moment a child talks about a funny experience he has had and causes everyone to laugh-even his teacher, you miss the moment they have grasp a certain concept, you miss so many beautiful moments- so all I can say is , enjoy every single moment with them. We have a classful of students for hours each day and each one is special- appreciate the time with them.
Some children love to go to summer classes or camps- which is fine if it is not too tiring for them. Let them enjoy their holidays.

I am a teacher and a mother, i can see both sides, i love being home with my children. During the holidays i plan the whole of next years work, rewrite schemes of work, marking etc. i also take work home every working day. If the holidays were shorter i would never have any evenings to spend with my own children.

I agree except I think they should go year round and have 2 weeks off every 3 months graduate when they are 14 and move out of the house when they are still smarter than me.

Why don't you let your children go to summer camp next year ?
There are some really good ones, expensive but brilliant for your children and you because they are out of the house meet new people have other people tell them what to do etc.Don't put them into the same camp though !
My children never wanted to go they had to because my holidays where not long enough, after one week of being there they always called home and said " Mum,can I stay longer please" I always planed that in so it wasn't a big surprise to me and I extended the time.
Good luck

I feel your pain...never thought the whole summer off was a good idea...even when I was in school (had to work with my dad all summer...for free). Children get bored over that long a break...I like year round school with 4 two week breaks.

Yes, six weeks is too long, especially for younger children. There is a lot they forget over such a period and have to learn again.
My proposal would be 4 weeks in summer and add two weeks to the winter break.

Be glad you don't live in America- they get three months. It is too long as they are always bored one week in, I think some schools have tested different holiday patterns so they are more little and often, but I don't know if and when it'll change country wide

Yes because they get bored. But then on the other hand if they had shorter summer holidays they would probably get breaks more often, so I guess this is a no win situation, so just buy som ear plugs and try to ignore them.

Six weeks? Here where I live the crazy system gives them 15 weeks! Are you kidding me!!
I'm a teacher, so I'm not complaining though. I get to play with my kids during that time.
