Ducati is a brand name for one of the most famous Italian motorcycle manufacturers of all time. Even though they're all V-twins (with a couple exceptions), they do not make cruisers; but otherwise they run the gamut from "naked" standards like the Monster series to the new 200+ HP, 999RR MotoGP replica that is rumored to top $60,000.

They are not cheap. The lowest end Ducati is the 620 Dark, and it still goes for around $7000. The sportbike lineup begins with the $13,000 749, and continues up through the $32,000 999R Xerox. Basically, the sportbikes are made to race on and are not very comfortable on the street, but you'll look GOOD!

If you love Italian design philosophy (i.e. it must perform AND look beautiful), then a Ducati is definitely a treat.

Ducati Motor Holding S.P.A. is a motorcycle company. Not a freakin motorcycle. That started in before World War 2 making and selling radios, after the war single cylinder motorcycles and then twin cylinder bikes. They're known for bikes like the 750SS, Pantah, 888 Superbike, 996, 999, and this year the first ever motorcycle company to make a MotoGP bike into a street bike: the Desmosedici RR for $60,000 and over 200hp.

Ducati's are gorgeous Italian V-twin motorcycles with less power but more torque than multi cylinder bikes. They sound fantastic and handle incredibly well, and most of them have really crappy electrics.
Thay also have the "Desmodronic" valve system, which works well, even though no-one understands how it works.

in car terms, it would come somewhere between Alfa Romeo and Ferrari.

Ducati used to sell single-cylinder 4-strokes, 160cc, 250, 350, 450. Then an inspired engineer built a V-twin from two singles. The V is 90 degrees instead of Harley's narrower angle (60?)
