Its the adrenalin rush and also knowing you have defied death. For some people it simply makes them feel more alive. For some its a way of facing their fears.

The human brain is subject to boredom. Boredom occurs when the current level of stimuli is no longer sufficient to sustain a conscious appreciation of life.
One possible response is to increase the level of stimuli.
But this increase in level of stimuli may be considered as excessive to other humans, thus we label such people as "thrill seekers", "adrenalin junkies" etc.

They might not consider it dangerous. I'd rather have a the bes time of my life than live forever and have a constant level without adrenaline rushes...it's funny how the human mind and body works...

It makes them feel alive, and know that their alive. Think of it like a pinch to the skin, a taste of reality. Well this might be a way for them to experience that. Before the time comes, which might never really come, because it might just so happen that when we go, only our body dies, not our mind. Go Descartes...

I started skydiving in 1987. For me it was a lot more than adrenaline.
It was surviving a planet comming at me 140 mph.
It was the defeat of gravity, and the feeling of leaving my stomach in the plane when I jumped out.
It was the awareness that life was to short.

Adrenalin. This hormone is addictive. The more you get used to it, the more the need becomes acute. So when one starts going for thrill, excess adrenalin secretion makes him/her to go for more...
