The constellations were created in large by the ancients in an attempt to make some sense of the heavens. They imagined a number of figures and attached some level of significance to their locations. In some cases they even made up fables and legends to go along with those figures.

Today the constellations are still used, not for legends or objects of worship, but as a means of grouping stars into areas.
Think of the constellations as neighborhoods and each star as being a resident of a particular neighborhood.

Each star has a true address in the form of RA and Declination, but the RA and Dec lines are not overlayed onto the night sky so when finding a particular location, it is best to use landmarks. The constellations are those landmarks.

Well, the constellations were named by the Greeks and Ptolemy. Others have added and named the constellations.
Here is a quote:
"The first thing you need to know is that constellations are not real! The constellations are totally imaginary things that poets, farmers and astronomers have made up over the past 6,000 years (and probably even more!). The real purpose for the constellations is to help us tell which stars are which, nothing more. On a really dark night, you can see about 1000 to 1500 stars. Trying to tell which is which is hard. The constellations help by breaking up the sky into more managable bits. They are used as mnemonics, or memory aids. For example, if you spot three bright stars in a row in the winter evening, you might realize, "Oh! That's part of Orion!" Suddenly, the rest of the constellation falls into place and you can declare: "There's Betelgeuse in Orion's left shoulder and Rigel is his foot." And once you recognize Orion, you can remember that Orion's Hunting Dogs are always nearby. Then you might recognize the two bright stars in the upper and lower left of the photograph as Procyon in Canis Minor and Sirius in Canis Major, respectively."

Constellations are just groupings of stars so you can recognize them in the sky. Hey if you have the time you can make your own constellation and draw them out to help you remember where they are located. And also remember the constellations move around since the earth rotates so the stars if you can recognize them are moving around ever so slowly like the moon from one part of the sky to the next.
