Rats are cuuuute.
Cockroaches are NASTY.
Even worse than cockroaches are those yucky waterbugs you find in Florida.
They are essentially cockroaches, but 3 times the size and THEY FLY.
I get nauseous everytime I see one and I can't kill them myself because:
1) They are really hard to catch
2) They are really hard to smash
( Very messy and I swear to God they scream. You can hear this little hissing sound. )
YUCK.

PS - Even though the rats in NY are as big as watermelons and not nearly as cuddly as reg. sized rats, they still do not compare to the waterbugs (Palmetto bugs) in Florida.

Cockroaches! Frankly because they definitely exist in larger numbers versus rats in a place. Rats you can still easily trap, but cockroaches literally live by the "we don't die, we multiply!" rule--you may have caught the adults, but there are eggs waiting to hatch. That, and the fact that cockroaches are harder to spot unless they are really huge or in large swarms, two situations which I dread. That, and rats can still be chased out by the cats or a highly vigilant dog...roaches...usually get past.

I loathe cockroaches, I think they are gross, can't say they scare me though. As for rats, since getting a cat, who loves to bring home presents including live and dead rats, they are still gross, but not so scary.
I also do some work at a vets where they keep domesticated rats as pets, and the rats are lovely, they've really changed my mind about rats as pets!

They scare me equally but if I had to make a choice: cockroach. Back in 1996, I had an office job through a temporary agency, I went to staple some papers; and a big, brown, juicy roach came crawling out of the stapler. I will say that I have carried my own small stapler in my purse ever since! The stapler is purple, my favorite color.

Ok we don't like either one, but sometimes those big juicy roaches can be tasty if you get them when they are still wiggly! Whoever said "rats" surely was not talking about us, the ratings rats! We are here to make Yahoo a better place, look at our picture, we are harmless! The Yamster is our cousin! You must know we are only here for your own good!
Thank you,
