'tis true, you can't really. you can try, but if it's spam or threats, they may be using a proxy or a remailer.

if it is spam or a jerk, do not email them back. it only let's them know they have a live "fish" and may very well sell your address to 100's more spammers/creeps. just use a junkmail function either on your ISP (internet provider/webmail) or on your emil program. I like Thunderbird. it sends all the crap to the trash befoore i even see it and it learns from stuff that you mark as junk.
