I think people giving nasty answers come into 3 categories!
1. Those who wouldn't say boo to you if they met you! too shy, too unsecure, no sense of self-belief/self-worth. So when facing their computer ... They feel strong, knowing there can be no return! No one to put them back into their place, hence they pass on nasty comments, makes them feel big. Did they have a modicum oif intelligence ... They'd know that their sarcasm reflects on them, not the questionner.
2. Some people are naturally sarcastic, do not have anough sense to differentiate between a joke question and a serious question. They act the same at home with their families ... They're generally egocentrists, and thoughtless people.
3. Some people think they're way too smart for others! They believe they know everything when in fact they don't! They can give you a nasty answer because they are not intelligent enough to read a question thoroughly before replying. They judge questions by their standards, and perception. They think they're so clever when in fact their nasty answers prove them to be anything but clever!
So really ... They're not very intelligent, uneducated and wouldn't know courtesy if they were to fall in it! And that answers your last question ... Why do they answer! Simply because they're to dumb to think before they act! Then again ... Some of them answer lots of questions because and probably ... Not many people want to know them, let alone communicate with them, because of their attitude!

I don't think it's got anything to do with being simply sad and lonely, but with a whole gamut of emotional responses. Since we are human with all the many emotional facets of our natures, we can offer a whole range of responses to the questions.
Sometimes we feel confidently knowledgeable about an answer and get pleasure from sharing that knowledge to the asker's benefit. Other times, the question will trigger a humorous reaction for which we will share the pleasure of the joke (be it wit, sarcasm, irony, satire). Yet other questions will arouse passions about deeply held beliefs so the expression may then become heated and conflicting (and emotionally charged).
The above examples all have their own variation of expression within them, too. And everyone feels different at any one time depending on their mood.
It really doesn't matter except that you are participating, the site's own momentum will carry it forward giving the thing a life and personality of its own.
Right I'm off for me breakfast...

They seem sad and in need of attention or a need to feel more intelligent by correcting a minor mistake or contradicting the author.
I guess if there's an obvious misinformation taking place then it's ok and right to share knowledge, but I agree with you when people become nasty and insulting it shows they have nothing else to offer.

Haven't you realised yet that most people get something for nothing at the expense of others, the 2 points for every answer on here is another example of something for nothing and that's why they do it, believe me there really are genuine people on here that do want questions answered for a real reason, guess to get to the gold we have to wade through the piranha's first.

Sorry, I question whether it's the genuine questions that get smart responses.
If you still feel that there are some questions that deserve better answers, then use the abuse buttons and flags if it's very bad.
I also agree that the points system doesn't deter the
Ragnarokers
'anything-for-points-club' either.

I could tell you what everyone tells me when I ask that. No one is on this site to ask serious questions. It's for fun lighten up. That's the gist of it anyway. I feel the same way you do, it's crap and it shows that not many on here do have intellect. Not any worthwhile anyway. Sad but true so what do you do?

I don't know the answer - but I do know that there are some deeply strange people on here.
I've learned the hard way that the ONLY way to deal with it is to not respond at all. Don't even e-mail them to tell them what you think. They just come back at you.
Even the most sensible questions get offensive or patronising answers, so you're not alone.

Some people take sarcasm as a substitute to intelligence. They use it to knock others down to try and make themselves look good or more superior than they actually are.
A good example would be to watch Mark Lawrenson on BBC's Football Focus, a good footballer in his day but bases his TV career on snide remarks.
