I've just joined a book club and recommended Perfume cos I thought it was brilliant. Now I'm having second thoughts. What do you think? Will anyone else like it?

It is a brilliant book. One I recommend without hesitation......it takes you into a way of percieving the world through the use of a sense we take for granted.

It's an excellent book. Horrible story, but beautifully written (and if it hadn't been so well written, it wouldn't be such a horrible story!).

Can't imagine it would be that popular in the US Midwest, or the Middle East, but you should be okay in Scotland (you don't know any Calvinists, do you?)

Saw a trailer for the movie last week—looks like a pretty good translation, but I'm not going to go and see it. Reading the book was enough!

Speaking of translations, 'Susskind' translates better as "Goodchild", which is not such an uncommon a surname in English. Could still be a pseudonym, though...

Patrick Suskind's Perfume is excellent. (Do you think it's a pseudonym? German for 'Sweetchild'?).

I could foresee some deeply religious and/or sensitive types becoming offended or otherwise self righteous about the subject matter and the sliding scale of morals within the book, but then again, isn't that the point? To examine some of the less savoury aspects of human nature through the medium of a novel? If you are in the USA ( or certain parts of it) you may come across some resistance. If in the UK, I doubt you would find anything other than enthusiasm for your choice.

Great book. But if we are talking about German writers, I'd vote for Heinrich Böll
