I used to use Norton Internet Security and Ad-Aware. They ended up clashing with each other a lot and crashed my system. I was told that it's not good to have two programs running with the same function.

Windows defender should work okay with NSW...it is true that having two resident antivirus programs will probably cause problems, but two or more antispy programs should not...the worst case scenario i've seen is that one recognizes the other as malware, but if you whitelist it, it's not a problem after that...as a rule, as many have noted, Norton is a resource hog, and has I think a bit more compatibility issues than some (when I was still using AOL...saints preserve me...I had a demo version of Norton Internet Security, and it wouldn't let me get on line no matter what I tried)...but most antispy programs (the legit ones anyway) have no problem coexisting with it (I don't use Norton anymore, but when I did, I was also running at minimum 2 antispy programs, and could have run more had I wanted to with no problems)

2 Antispyware programs running together is bad news. Defender and Norton are both worthless, especially Norton. Go with AVG free. As the name implies, it's free.
