One day, Caroline decides to leave her cruel husband and went to stay in a womans reguge close by to Lake Round; so called because it is a perfect circle. However, her husband follows her there . To escape, she takes the only rowing boat and rows to the centre of the lake which is marked with a buoy. Her husband is furious but, knowing she would have to come ashore eventually, decided to wait for her on the edge of the lake. He assumed that because he could run 4 times faster than she could row, it would be simple for him to catch her when she reached the edge of the lake. But Caroline was also giving this some thought. She new she could out-run him when she got ashore so she devised a plan that got her ashore before he could get there.

What was her strategy? You can assume that at all times she new her exact position on the lake.

Say the radius of the lake is 1 unit. Pick any radius r with

1-pi/4 < r < 1/4

She can first row out to the circle at radius r, then row along the circle until she gets to a point directly opposite the husband (possible since her angular speed is 1/4r > 1 times the angular speed of the husband). When that point is reached make a break directly for the shore - the distance to be covered is less than pi/4 whereas the husband must cover a distance pi.

Always row exactly away from where he was located. Since he would be running, your path would follow a path that curved yet kept moving towards the shore.

the distance from the centre to the shore is the radius = r
the circumference of the circle c = 3.14*2r
the husband needs to run only half circle = 3.14 r
as his speed is 4 times the rowing speed this means he can run the half circle before she rows to shore. The husband runs the half circle when she rows only 0.785 of the radius. if the woman rows in and out so that the distance to the shore is <0.785 of the radius of the circle while her husbad is exactly on the other direction she can reach shore before him.
