I'm guessing that you're using Tripadvisor.com?
The truth is that rival hotel chains have been known to add bad reviews to the site to deter customers from usint the competition. Take a look at the general rating of the hotel, read a few reviews and find out if the things that you find are important are generally well rated. If they are - then go with it. As with anything in life - you can please some people sometimes, but you can't please all the people all the time!
If most of the reviews are bad or if you feel that the reviews that are good don't reflect on the things that you find important then give it a miss.

If you know someone that likes the same things as yourself and the have been there ask them, their answer is likely to be nearer the truth. Failing that the trip adviser cannot be relied upon as it takes in so many varied opinions, mainly from the moaners you get at every Hotel no matter how nice it is. You will have to take a gut feeling on this one.

Take recent reviews into account. One of my best friends recommended a hotel for me where he had been one year ago. It was terrible. So I don't trust reviews older than 3 months and only a single review.

In any criticism or judgement by others, I believe the one with most facts more. Even when I cannot substantiate those facts.
eg.
"The universe is 2568 gazillion parsecs at it's widest point, light will cross it in around 10 billion earth years. Subsequently any attempt to cross it by humans will require extreme technological advances."
"The universe is too big for us too cross, I don't think we ever will."
Both are rubbish, but if you had to choose one to believe, which would you.
Also in Hotel reviews, if you have information (distance to beach, distance to town centre, size of rooms etc.) you might find the things they consider bad are in fact good to you.

I guess that depends on how much I was spending.... If it was a lot, then I would put more credence upon the reviews of another.

No, some people find reasons to complain no matter what.
Look at the complaints and decide whether there is any substance to them or not.
But basically, just go for it. One man's paradise is another man's marks and spencers

Most people are influenced by others view and experiences.
Its largely a question of judging whether the people whose views you are considering have the same values as yourself.

Hard to advice on such complicated issue!
But, on the other side, you are: Mrs Captain and either you or the captain will straighten things out!

I would pay attention to what others say but reserve judgement based on my own observation.
