First, make sure you have natural light around. The sun is best, but if you can't be in the sun, make sure you have a nice white light available.
Second, dab a bit of the foundation along your jaw line. Supposedly, this is the best place to apply the color to see if it should be a good match. It's best to dab three or four different colors within your range. Whichever "melts" into your face (as in, you can't even see it) is the correct color for you.
The other option is to go with a good, honest friend to the makeup counter at the department store. Have the artist try a few colors on you and have your friend tell you whether it's really working for you or not. Bring a digital camera to take some pics if you want to review at home.
Try MAC - their colors are great...

Most of the time you can try out foundation at the store. Just rub a little on your hand or even face if you have a mirror. And if it matches you naturall skin color then its a good foundation. Also try to get a non-oil based foundation. It's best for your complection but you dont have to have it. So, try to get a foundation that is closest to your skin color not alot darker to get a "tan" look because unless you want to apply it everywhere on your body so you will look even then be my guest. Just simply one that is closest to your skin color so you can match evenly all around but cover up all the uneven areas of your face and acne.

The first step is to figure out if your skin has a cool, warm, or neutral tone. Someone working at the store you go to should be able to help with that. Then you hold the swatches up to your skin and decide how dark you need it to be. If it blends completely with your skin, then it is the right colour. You might not find the perfect colour for your skin, but that can be okay sometimes, especially if it is the right warmth. I have issues with shade because I have very pale skin and have trouble finding the right shade, but I found one that works well enough for me. It is the lightest shade I could find and it is only a little darker than my skin. The fact that it is a cool tone really helps because my skin has a blue undertone. I hope to have been of assistance.

The colour you choose has to start with your hair, skin and eye color. If you are dark in all three, try not to pick a pink tinge. You will need a bronze type. If you are fair in all three then you will need a slight pink tinge but be careful there is no orange in it. Stick to top brands and get a beautician to help you choose what is right for.

when finding your colour, go for a well-known brand.. you don't want your colour to dissappear off the market.
