If you go to http://mobile.yahoo.com - on the right hand side, half way down the page, you'll see where you can SMS anywhere in the USA for free.
There are other services that allow you to SMS for free - such as http://thesmszone.com/ (they are worldwide, but I have never tried them) - but you are already a member of Yahoo!, so you might as well use their interface.
Ifyou are trying to SMS to a cell phone in a foreign country, you should find a local site to that country that has a free service - that might work better than the 2 listed above.
The recipient still has to pay regular data transmission charges: whatever their phone company usually charges them.
