Are the American automobile manufacturers ever going to wake up?

After witnessing the collapse of the GMC, and large amputations of the jobs in Ford, we must learn something.

The former head of Nissan's engineering team said after the fall of GMC, "the American automobile industry failed to listen to what the consumers demand."

Sure, our flashes are being eaten off by the Japanese and other foreign autos, but I do not see any sign of getting better.

Will the perfect storm come to the U.S. automakers? Will the Americans see the major fall of the American auto industries, significantly affecting our economy and bring the nightmare? (well, we are sort of having the nightmare already...)

Will the Americans get up from the comfort zone? Or will we change after the horrible events wake us up? Or will we fall into the deep, unwakeable sleep forever?

I want to hear what you think.

I'm not sure what this question is about. But, if it has to do with the failing american car industry, I will give you my own personal reasons for buying a camry (toyota). #1 It's a very smooth, comfortable riding car #2 It's great on gas #3 My insurance stay's low #4 It fits a family of four very comfortable #5 Very professional looking.

Those are the reasons I chose a Japanese car. The Ford makers produced gas guzzler's and a mustang that teenagers like. But, what mid size car does it have to offer?

So, I am in a comfort zone with my Camry - sorry, the US needs to come up with something similar to convince me differently.

The US auto makers are in trouble.....and probably will not regain their previous glory. Similar to the American TV manufactures.

If they do snap back it will be product designed and built in another country.

during the gas crisis in the 80's they gave us the Maverick and the Vega , Pinto. those were winners right?..not.. Now we are at record high gas prices and whats their answer? two new SUV's go figure.

My beef is quality and dependability. What happened?? how long does it take to correct a design flaw? or decide that plastic parts aren't cutting it for engine gaskets?

For the effect on the economy look at Michigan I don't think that state has recovered from the exodus to Mexico in the 80's.

It isn't the automakers that will take down the US economy it is the continued outsourcing of jobs to India and China.

The rich in the US don't care because they see an immediate up side now when their stocks go up. How many jobs can you export? I guess the working man will have to work for less and be competitive with workers in India and China.........

Unfortunately, Americans are easily swayed by the publicity/media/advertising machines. When the auto industry advertisers said Americans wanted the 12-15 MPG gas-guzzling-SUV's, and Hummer's, guess what -- Americans bought them and never once complained about the fuel consumption, cost of operation, or, even our delicate environment.
Americans, including my daughter and son-in-law, are now in the midst of fighting a war based on the drives of American big business, of which includes the Detroit Wheeler-Dealers, and that is supported by the Republican political machine. No conservative conservation there!!!
I can't stand the thought of Americans being mesmerized into accepting the status quo. I've really come to appreciate the term, and understand why are fore-parents decided to seriously consider, then act to commit high treason and REVOLT.

That's why I bought a Toyota Prius! Japan seems to have all our best interests at the heart of industry and economics!!!

GM's idea of a perfect storm, was a GEO!!This country don't know how to handle quality. It's as foreign as a Geely. They are dropping the ball and it is costing all of us!They get the gov to bail them out every time,it looks like since we are so nice to pay for their mistakes we should be stock holders???

Eventually, maybe 2 or 3 conglomerates will own all of the automobile manufacturers-it's already happening.

No "perfect storm" but no ""perfect" recovery either. They will continue to bungle along; a shell of their former selves.
