Because we love them!
Or if you want the cynical reason: parents spend a lot of time & energy to reproduce & propagate their DNA so it is natural that they would care about their "investment"

Because children, especially young children, are ignorant and will often do reckless, dangerous things until they can start establishing right from wrong, as well as what's safe and what's dangerous.
For example, let's say a strange man comes up to your 5 year old. He holds out candy, and tries to make the child think he's someone to be trusted. Because your child doesn't know better, they may go with that man, who will then do who knows what to them (you're lucky if it's just pedophile stuff, he could very well kill them).
Or let's say your young 6 year old sees a bottle of anti-freeze. It smells nice, and it even tastes sweet, so he starts to drink it. Next thing you know, he's in the hospital with severe poisoning.
Or a 10 year old playing ball on the sidewalk, and the ball goes into the street. If you haven't trained them that walking out into the street is bad, they may very well just run into the street...and get hit by a car that may not have seen them in time, and couldn't brake fast enough.
Sometimes kids will do stupid stuff, not because they're idiots, but because they don't know any better. For example, my older brother made our 1 year old niece touch a heater while it was on. She did, only to start crying non-stop because she didn't know touching a hot stove = pain and bad. Needless to say though, she's never touched it again, or even gone near it.
Until they're old enough to start making good, reasonable judgment for themselves, of course parents will worry. It's up to the parents to teach their child right from wrong, and why they shouldn't touch a hot stove, or wander off with a stranger, or run into the street before looking to make sure there's no cars coming.
And that's why parents worry :)

Personally- I think it's because most of us really aren't too sure of what we're doing. The kid didn't come with a booklet of instructions when it was born, and half of what we THOUGHT raising a child would be like- turned out to be ANYTHING like we expected. As a result, we lie in bed at night with our eyes wide open- wondering, "Jesus- the kid's turning out to be more like me every day... -Where did I go wrong...?" I guess it just goes with the territory.

We're parents and we love our children. We also know from experience how painful it can be when you make major mistakes. We've been there, done that, have the scars on our bodies and on our hearts to prove it, and we don't want to see our children be as stupid as we were.

We want things to turn out better for you than they did/have for us. Therefore we worry about everything. It's our right.
Be thankful parents worry...some parents don't really care.

Because we love our children more than ourselves. Each bump or bruise touch our hearts. Our worrying is our caring and love. One day you'll understand this.

Because having a child is like having your heart outside of your body! You love that child more than you love your own life and you would do anything to protect that child from harm. Also, you can't imagine life without your child, so you want them to protect their lives (i.e. drive carefully, don't do drugs, etc.)

We love them, and want the best for them.
you don't want them to ever get hurt, ever.
letting go is hard to do, but inthe Fathers hands they go.
we have them only for a short time so love them as much
as you can before returning them to Heavan.
