Advantages: the press provides the American public with the information they need to know about government action whether the action is a success or failure. The constitution along with the courts favor the press except when libel/harrasement is involved.
Disadvantages: The press has the ability to influence the public by presenting stories they know will give them ratings and money.

Like freedom of speech, it is important for the health of a free society.
We can have a valid democracy (or republic) without freedom of speech of freedom of the press. But people would be just guessing (based on whispered rumors) who they should vote for or what's going on in the world.
The press also acts as another check-and-balance against the government, exposing government corruption and illegal programs.
Sadly, many members of the press also go too far, with character attacks on private individuals, embarrassing people for no valid reason. Those smear-campaigns are uncalled for, but the more the press gets involved in politics, the more it seems to act like politicians.
Finally, the press (like many other people) also don't always make clear the distinction between when they are reporting verifiable fact and when they are reporting speculation or rumor.
One reason I like Jon Stewart of the Daily Show. You don't have to guess when they've edited or altered something. They make it blatantly obvious. So, you can tell what's real and what's fake. I wish more newspapers and news shows were willing to admit when they are repeating spin or propaganda, and when they are truly being objective (which is becoming more and more rare).

The right winged republicans love freedom of the press if they get to write everything people read in the newspapers. The problem begins when some disagrees with their view of life or something. They all seem to be wired very young for being selfish and unimaginative.
It must be a virile disease or something like that because often they look really good until they walk, talk, look or any other movement that immediately gives them away as a closed circuit.
I always have this feeling that I should go up to them and say, "testing, testing, testing, do you hear in there,;;;;;;testing tes;;;" Sometimes I have to escort them home and I hate that two, because the girls always cry before the evening is over, and the guys just stop functioning and I say Good Night.
Strange!

The advantage of freedom of the press is to inform the people (public) of important affairs that we need to know. Thus, freedom of speech.
The disadvantage of freedom of the press is the star following such as marriage, who's dating who, who got caught with who, and etc......We don't need to know this. Its not important! This is call stupid freedom of the press. Also, no one should have their private life all out in the open! That is bad press!

Advantage:
Freedom of press is the cornerstone of a healthy democracy. Once the press has been stifled, the truth will be hidden from the people... disaster. Look at Zimbabwe as an example. No-one actually knows what going on in there because Mugabe's thugs have killed off all press freedom..

I support it. However, I support Freedom to REPORT the News, not MAKE the News. Too many Main Stream Press agencies are putting too much spin on their reporting and, therefore distorting the facts.

I agree with freedom of press to a certain degree, however why print something to purposely cause upset/insult to particular groups in our society. There are times when it's better to bite our tongue rather than try to cause unrest just because we have the right of freedom of speech.

the click must have unrestricted freedom. no one is forcing human beings to ascertain what they dont opt to, or to purchase newspapers or watch information channels which they dont like. consequently press, victims like Jessica Lal, Priya Mattoo and so on. were given justice, albeit belatedly. we desire a loose press. someone might want to record a PIL on behalf of the murdered victims in the Dinakaran incident.
